Founding Backend Engineer – Build the AI Stack Powering the Future of Hardware

Techmunity are exclusively hiring for a Founding Backend Engineer to help build the technical foundation of a next-generation AI startup that’s rethinking how the physical world gets engineered.

This role is for builders. You’ll be part of a small, high-agency team designing the backend infrastructure for a deeply technical product — one that could redefine how robots, rockets, vehicles, and machines are developed over the next decade.

The Mission

Software engineering has had its “Copilot moment.” Hardware hasn’t — yet.

This startup is building an AI-native platform for hardware engineers, starting with robotics and aerospace.

It’s a secure, collaborative system where AI agents can plan, simulate, and run complex engineering workflows — automating the slowest parts of design and unlocking 10x faster development.

The founders are second-time builders with deep technical roots:

• One previously led the engineering team at a university space programme, shipping code to satellites and building reusable rockets.

• The other co-founded a 100+ person Hyperloop team and has started multiple ventures across deep tech and software.

They’re joined by backing from SuperSeed, one of Europe’s most respected AI-focused funds — early investors in breakout companies like Magic.dev, AI Build, and others shaping the next wave of AI-native infrastructure.

The Opportunity

The company is currently in the final phase of building its MVP. You’ll be joining as one of the first engineers, working directly with the founders to build core systems from scratch.

They’re planning to raise their Seed round in 2026, and the engineering team being recruited now will be front and centre in that journey — shaping not just product architecture, but culture, pace, and credibility with future customers and investors.

The Role – Founding Backend Engineer

You’ll be responsible for designing and building critical parts of the backend platform, including:

• Secure execution environments to safely run user-defined tools in the cloud (think Dockerised sandboxing, strict isolation, dynamic dependencies)
• Orchestration systems for real-time AI agents to execute complex workflows
• API integrations with external systems like CAD/CAE tools, simulations, or PLM software
• State tracking and event-driven architecture to support reliable, scalable automation

This is deep systems work, but done quickly and pragmatically — the goal is to ship usable product, not perfect abstractions.

What You’ll Need

• 1–3 years of experience as a software engineer, ideally in a fast-paced startup
• Strong backend skills in Python (Rust is a bonus — or eagerness to learn it)
• Experience with Docker, AWS, and building secure or sandboxed infra
• Familiarity with event-driven systems, APIs, and cloud architecture
• Bonus: exposure to hardware, robotics, CAD, simulation, or agentic workflows
• A clear record of excellence — whether that’s in student teams, side projects, startups, or technical competitions
